SUMMARY:HYBRID: Public speaking in Practice (in the In Person space)
DESCRIPTION:\n \n\n\nAbout the webinar\n\nAs far back as the 4th century
BCE\, great thinkers like Aristotle contemplated the power and
responsibility tied to public speaking. Aristotle called it Rhetoric\, the
art of persuasion - something to be carefully cultivated with attention to
logic\, ethics and emotional appeal. In academia\, public speaking governs
many of our scholarly pursuits\, whether we pitch an idea in class\,
present at a conference\, or teach students. Public speaking is more than
just delivery. It encapsulates the following: responding to context\,
crafting the content\, sequencing ideas in a compelling way\, and
delivering a persuasive speech. This workshop explores the key features of
public speaking\, interspersed with practical exercises that relate closely
to your world and your needs.\n\n\n\nIn preparation for the workshop\, we
invite you to audit the Coursera MOOC\, Introduction to Public Speaking
 (https://www.coursera.org/learn/public-speaking). By auditing the MOOC\,
you will gain free access to the instructional videos\, without needing to
complete any of the MOOC tasks. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nImportant to Note:
Because public speaking in an In Person environment differs from a Virtual
setting\, this hybrid workshop focuses exclusively on presenting in a
face-to-face setting. Those who cannot join in person have the option to
attend remotely in order to benefit from the learning\, however\, most
value will be extracted by attending in person. If you are in interested
in attending the session focused on public speaking on a Virtual platform
e.g. MS Teams\, etc.\, please keep an eye out for the second semester
calendar as a repeat of this session will be offered. \n\n\n\n\n\n
\n\nNB: If you wish to attend an in person workshop and have disability
access requirements\, please email disabilityservice@uct.ac.za and CC
pgdevelopment@uct.ac.za to arrange the appropriate services\, where
 available.\n\n \n\nAbout the presenter\n\nDr. Aditi Hunma\, Senior lecturer
in the Language Development Group (LDG)\, CHED\n\nAditi has a background in
English literature\, Linguistics and Philosophy and a specialisation in
Education in the Applied Language and Literacy stream. She was appointed
in 2012 to research\, design and teach on academic literacy courses and
online writing modules. The design of those modules formed part of the
digital turn in LD\, that went on to inform her research interests\, and
that of LD colleagues with whom she wrote collaborative papers. She is a
member of a regional Extended Curriculum Programme organising team\, where
emerging educational matters are discussed through seminars and annual
conferences. She has been a Principal Investigator on a DHET-funded
project to design a wrapped MOOC course based on a Coursera MOOC\, Writing
Your World\, that she and colleagues were involved in designing and
offering. The course\, now in its fifth iteration\, focuses on academic
and research literacies in preparation for students’ second year of
studies\, and sees an annual enrolment of students across academic years of
study and disciplines. \n\n\n\n \n\nWhat level of study is the workshop
