HYBRID: UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

ARE YOU THE NEXT 3MT UCT WINNER?

If you are a Masters or PhD student with a research story to tell (i.e. you’re far enough in your research journey to have results to share), consider entering into the UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Hybrid Competition, to be held on Tuesday, the 30th of September 2025, and stand in line to potentially become a winner in either the Masters or PhD category.  Monetary prizes will be awarded for the best presentations in each category.

The 3MT competition is an international concept and organisation that challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research findings, so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience – i.e. in 3 minutes!  Battle it out against friends and colleagues for prizes and bragging rights, as you learn and demonstrate the art of presenting your research in a compelling and clear way.

Winners in the PhD category will go on to participate in the hybrid National 3MT Competition, hosted by the University of the Free State, on Friday the 24th of October 2024.  The National competition prizes are as follows:

  • First PhD prize: R18,000
  • Second PhD prize: R15,000
  • Third PhD prize: R13,000

In order to help competition entrants in developing the art of presenting their work concisely and succinctly and providing more information about the competition, you may join the hybrid Preparing for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition workshop from 10h00 to 13h00 on the following dates.  The second workshop is a repeat, so you need only sign up for one session:

  • Monday, the 18th of August - Register HERE.
  • Wednesday, the 3rd of September - Register HERE.

To enter the UCT 3MT Competition, click Begin Registration below and select the format in which you will be participating i.e. IN PERSON or ONLINE.  Entries close on Friday, the 29th of August at 12h00 (midday).
