HYBRID: UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

ARE YOU THE NEXT 3MT UCT WINNER?

If you are a Masters or PhD student with a research story to tell (i.e. you’re far enough in your research journey to have results to share), consider entering into the UCT Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Hybrid Competition, to be held on Friday the 20th of September 2024, and stand in line to potentially become a winner in either the Masters or PhD category.  Monetary prizes will be awarded for the best presentations in each category.

The 3MT competition is an international concept and organisation that challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research findings, so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience – i.e. in 3 minutes!  Battle it out against friends and colleagues for prizes and bragging rights, as you learn and demonstrate the art of presenting your research in a compelling and clear way.

Winners in the PhD category will go on to participate in the hybrid National 3MT Competition, hosted by the University of the Free State, on Friday the 25th of October 2024.  The National competition prizes are as follows:

  • First PhD prize: R16,000
  • Second PhD prize: R13,000
  • Third PhD prize: R11,000

In order to help competition entrants in developing the art of presenting their work concisely and understandably, we are holding a voluntary preparatory online workshop, Preparing for the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, on Monday, the 19th of August.  For more information and to register for this workshop, click HERE.

And to enter the UCT 3MT Competition, click Begin Registration below and select the format in which you will be participating i.e. IN PERSON or ONLINE.  Entries close on Friday, the 23rd of August at 12h00 (midday).

If you have any questions about the competition, please contact the Office for Postgraduate Studies and Researcher Development at pgdevelopment@uct.ac.za.
