IN PERSON: Postgraduate Supervision Training (for Postdoctoral Fellows only)

About this workshop

Most Postdoctoral Fellows find themselves involved in both co-supervision and supervision of postgraduate students, ranging from Honours, to Master’s and Doctoral students.  By virtue of their focus on research and possible further pathway in an academic career, this is a natural and expected part of a Postdoc’s development.

This full-day, in person workshop offers UCT Postdocs an opportunity to engage in understanding postgraduate student needs and good supervision practises within the UCT system (which is not unlike most other university systems).  Presenters drawn from within UCT will interact with Postdocs in a diverse and informative programme.

The topics to be covered are:

  • The scope of postgrad degrees (Honours, Master’s, PhD)
  • Roles and responsibilities of supervisor and student
  • Good vs poor supervision characteristics
  • Developing a good supervisor-student relationship (communication, MoU, dealing with conflict)
  • Different supervisory styles
  • Giving effective feedback on the thesis writing
  • Managing the process and the research project on the postgraduate journey
  • Understanding examination processes
  • Research integrity and responsible conduct of research - a primer

What previous attendees have said about this workshop:

  • “Just the right level of to the point sharing of content and engagement from participants. Spot on!”
  • “It will help me reflect on my supervision journey and identify areas where I am lacking and need to improve on.”
  • “I'm supervising a Master's student and co-supervising a PhD student now, so I can immediately apply all of I've learned here. So useful.”
