IN PERSON: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Intensive workshop (Full Day Repeat)

IN PERSON: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Intensive workshop (Full Day Repeat)

Research Integrity (RI) and the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) is defined as “the practice of scholarly investigation with integrity. It involves the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles for all activities related to research.” It is also “critical for excellence, as well as public trust, in research.” (UCT Policy for the Responsible Conduct of Research).

In this intensive workshop we will take a blended learning, VIRT2UE-inspired, approach to building both theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of RCR. We will cover the following topics: (i) Introduction to Research Integrity; (ii) Research Misconduct and Questionable Research Practices and, (iii) Responsible Authorship and Publication practices.

Participants will be required to complete the following activities:

  1. Preparation activity: 3 asynchronous online learning modules, aligned with the topics listed above (these modules are freely available to UCT staff and PG students via the SuccessFactors Learning Management System). These online modules underpin the workshop programme and will start to build a foundation of theoretical knowledge that participants need to engage meaningfully in RI/RCR.
  2. Attendance at the OPGS-ORI full-day, in-person, workshop. Online learning modules must be completed before attending the in-person workshop. The workshop builds on the theoretical knowledge from the online learning modules by providing a space to practice research integrity, using a variety of exercises to develop moral sensitivity and strategies for managing, mitigating, or handling RI challenges or for practicing research responsibly.

Online learning modules can be accessed on SuccessFactors, once logged-in, search for “Research Integrity”.

Queries can be directed to research.integrity@uct.ac.za.

  • "I am grateful to attend such a wonderful and interactive training."
  • "Paula is such an excellent speaker - much credit goes to her as well as Amanda for these useful sessions. I could not attend all of them but the ones I did attend were absolutely amazing: engaging and informative. Thank you once again."
  • "...there are channels we can follow if things break down with our supervisors - I am not as naïve as I was before the session."
