Preparing and delivering a great oral presentation for conferences
Target audience: all postgraduates
Time: Two hours
What to bring: scrap paper, a soft felt tipped pen/koki, a pair of scissors. A flash drive/laptop (not crucial, but if you want to research some images, then this is good).
About the speaker: Bastienne Klein teaches verbal and written presentation skills for the Professional Communication Unit, Commerce Faculty UCT.
This session gives minimal but crucial input on how to prepare and present an oral presentation at an academic conference, particularly on how to work with nervousness, powerpoints, - and speak without cue cards. For the balance of the session you will use this input to prepare a presentation on the topic of your choice, ideally one that you want to present in an academic conference or academic setting. Working in buddy pairs, you will work on storying your presentation, get feedback, and get practice in presenting parts of it either to each other, or where time allows - to the class, where the facilitator will give encouragement and feedback.
